Volvo has announced it will stop importing the S90 sedan into the US due to the ongoing trade war between the US and China.The sedan,which has been manufactured at Volvo’s Daqing plant in China since 2018,was already struggling with low sales,moving just 1,364 units in 2024.The trade war and the high tariffs on Chinese goods,including vehicles,have only made the situation worse for the Swedish automaker.
The US has imposed a hefty 125%import tariff on Chinese-made cars,five times higher than the 25%tariff on vehicles from other countries.This tariff has made it financially unfeasible for Volvo to continue selling the S90 in the US.According to an insider,instead of dealing with the impact of the tariffs,Volvo has decided to discontinue the model in the American market altogether.
In response,Volvo plans to focus on its more popular models,such as the XC90,XC60,and XC40,which have a larger presence in the US market.Additionally,the company is looking to reduce incentives on current models to help cover the costs of the tariffs.However,it is facing significant challenges since 96.8%of Volvo’s US sales come from imported vehicles.
The decision to discontinue the S90 is part of a broader trend,as several foreign car manufacturers,including Lotus,JLR,VW,and Audi,have paused shipments to the US due to the unpredictable impact of tariffs.This ongoing disruption in the market shows that the situation may worsen for foreign car brands,with more models likely to be affected by the tariffs in the future.The S90’s discontinuation could just be the beginning of more changes to come.
